Bungling burglar left her handbag, ID and sneakers at Capel Sound foreshore campsite crime scene

A boozed-up burglar was looking for more grog when she came across alcohol in a Capel Sound campsite caravan. But the owner saw her and chased her away, and she left far more than her footprints behind.

A tipsy thief who bungled a boozy burglary was on the lookout for more grog when she left her handbag, ID and sneakers at the scene of her crime.

Karen Ezzy also tried to use a stolen gift voucher to buy jewellery, left her fingerprints on Lego at the scene of another burglary and was found with a stolen Samsung tablet when she was arrested.

This was while the homeless 41-year-old, who has six pages of prior convictions, was on a community corrections order for similar dishonesty offences.

Ezzy pleaded guilty to nine burglary, theft, proceeds of crime and court order breaches at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The court heard a caravan owner was at his Capel Sound campsite home on March 3 this year when he heard a sound.

When he saw a shadow he went outside and began chasing the thief, but could not catch them.

When he came back to his caravan he found a pair of runners, a handbag with ID belonging to Ezzy inside and a bag with two bottles of alcohol that had been taken from his annex.

Ezzy came back to the campsite the next day, asking random people if they had seen her handbag, but it had already been given to police.

On May 2 this year she broke in to a Rye home and was filmed on CCTV stealing a number of bottles of alcohol as well as trying to take a TV sound bar.

She had unwittingly left her fingerprints on a Lego box and was arrested the next day at a Rosebud pub, still wearing the same shoes she had on in the CCTV footage.

And in November last year she tried to use a stolen $400 jewellery voucher at a Rosebud shop that had been taken in a Blairgowrie burglary.

Ezzy’s lawyer told the court there was an inpatient bed available at Odyssey House to help her get over her drug addiction, which started when she began injecting ice at the age of 14.

He said she self-medicated to deal with her PTSD from being physically attacked both as a child and an adult, and the offences were committed to repay drug debts.

He said she had already spent 85 days in custody and this sentence should be deferred to give her a chance to do the rehab program.

Magistrate Vicky Prapas said if a suitable way to transport her to Odyssey House could be found she would be bailed.

She said Ezzy’s case will be adjourned and she will return to court to be sentenced in two months’ time.
