German shepherd stabbed on Grand Final Day on road to recovery

A GERMAN shepherd viciously stabbed at Capel Sound on Grand Final Day is on the road to recovery as the hunt for the dogs attackers steps up and new witnesses come forward.

THE owner of a German shepherd viciously stabbed at Capel Sound has spoken out about the “shocking” attack, which left his best mate fighting for life.

Bear, a four-and-a-half-year-old, suffered deep cuts to his head and torso, which required surgery, but is now on the road to recovery.

The dog, bred by police breeders, got into a scrap with another dog at his owner’s property on Point Nepean Rd just before midnight on Grand Final Day.

The other dog was accompanied by two men, believed to be its owners.

Since the attack, three new potential witnesses have reached out to police.

One witness told police he saw the men putting their dog in the car after its tussle with Bear, before they went back to Bear and beat him with a sharp instrument.

“It’s so shocking,” owner Damien Brown said.

“If they’re dog owners themselves, you’d think they’d be animal-lovers. I’d say they’re not quite right in the head.”

The brutal attack came just days before an 11-year-old Maltese cross jack russell was stabbed to death in a Dandenong backyard.

Last financial year, RSPCA figures showed there were 321 cases of cruelty towards animals in the Mornington Peninsula Shire reported to the welfare body — the seventh highest number of cases out of all Victorian council areas.

Despite his horrific experience, Mr Brown said Bear was now “in good spirits” and on a cocktail of painkillers and antibiotics.

“He’s got a long road to recovery,” Mr Brown said.

“He just needs to stay still for six-to-eight weeks.”

But he said he was concerned Bear could suffer long term neurological damage.

Mr Brown said he and Bear, who have been best mates since Bear was eight weeks old, were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support they’d received.

Constable Scott Loudon, who is overseeing the investigation into the attack, said three new potential witnesses had reached out to him.

He also said he had contacted a number of shop owners on Point Nepean Rd, seeking CCTV footage.

“Whoever commits these horrific acts will be brought to justice,” Constable Loudon said.

Mr Brown agreed.

“I definitely think the people are going to get caught,” he said.
