A DEPARTMENT of Health and Human Services employee has been stood down pending an investigation after a savage dog attack at a department house.

A Mill Park dog owner, who did not want to be named, said her dog was left with a broken leg, severe puncture wounds and a $1200 vet bill after it was ripped from her arms by an English staffordshire terrier, which ran from the government owned property on June 26.

“The dog just locked on.

“I’ll never recover,” the woman said.

The woman said she had to take a week off to care for her Maltese cross rescue dog, and was thousands of dollars out of pocket.

DHHS spokeswoman Ruth Ward said the dog which carried out the attack was owned by a staff member.

“The department believes the dog involved in the incident was the pet of a staff member who did not have permission to bring that particular dog into the workplace.”

The employee would remain off work pending the findings of a department investigation.

Whittlesea Council partnerships and engagement director Liana Thompson said the council was investigating.

The dog believed to be responsible for the bloody attack was not located until a week after the incident, the council confirmed.

The dog would remain at a pound in Whittlesea while a decision was made about its future.

The owner of the injured dog said she would take legal action if the DHHS staff member did not surrender their dog to be put down.

“What if it had been a child I was holding and not a pet?

“The dog needs to be put down.”
