A drink-driver who tried to avoid a booze bus before blowing nearly three times over the limit told cops he’d only had “three pots of beer”.

Jason Vines, 24, registered a reading of .136, but paid a high price for his evasive and drunken driving at Frankston Magistrates’ Court yesterday, losing his licence for 13 months.

Police had set up a booze bus operation on Nepean Highway in Frankston on August 5 last year.

At 8.52pm Vines was signalled by an officer to drive into the adjacent car park to be breathalysed but he drove on.

Officers went after him, pulled him over and took him back to be tested, where he blew .136.

He said he’d refused to stop at the police check because he was scared he might be over the limit after having three pots of beer at a nearby hotel.

Vines told them he was sorry for causing them the extra work.

His car was impounded and he lost his licence on the spot.

Representing himself in court the window company project manager said he had since moved from his Frankston area home to Brooklyn to make it easier to get to work.

Vines said he was “surprised by the number” when told he had registered nearly three times over the legal drink-drive limit.

He said that was the first and only time he had driven while drunk and said he was thankful no-one was hurt by his actions.

Magistrate Vicky Prapas said he must have known he was over the limit.

“It is scary that the community is sharing the road with someone with that reading,” she said.

But she also acknowledged he had no priors, had already paid a financial penalty due to the impound fees, and that he was sorry for what had happened.

Vines was convicted and fined $500 and had his licence disqualified for 13 months, backdated to August.
