Cranbourne Gardens executive director Chris Russell said the gardens was one of the last remaining secure habitats in southeast Melbourne for the southern brown bandicoot.
“We have been working with the City of Casey and developers to explore ways that this beautiful native animal can coexist with the rapidly expanding population, through creation of habitat corridors in new developments and road underpasses,” he said.
“The support of the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning in creating this new role is important in providing better information to a range of audiences about what is needed in new and existing estates to create bandicoot friendly suburbs.

“There is a lot more that needs to be done to educate industry and the community on bandicoots, so this special species receives all the protection it can get.”
The position will have a key role in engaging local communities, schools, land owners, council planners and developers, helping them to understand the scope and purpose of the work to conserve the bandicoot and local biodiversity and habitat.
Applications close September 19.
