Christmas miracle needed for 2nd Chance Cat Rescue

A housing bungle has left a Hampton Park cat rescuer and her 16 furry felines with nowhere to go, just two weeks out from Christmas.

A Casey cat rescuer is hoping a Christmas miracle will see herself and her cats with a roof over their head in time for the festive season.

2nd Chance Cat Rescue founder Daniela Maslen, her husband and their rescue cats were left homeless last month when the sale of their Hampton Park home fell through.

WHERE TO FIND MELBOURNE’S BEST CHRISTMAS LIGHTS 2018

The Maslens and their 16 rescue cats are currently in temporary accommodation in Harkaway and are trying to keep their Christmas cheer despite continual setbacks.

“There must be a silver lining at the end of the tunnel — we just don’t know how long the tunnel is or what the silver lining will be,” Ms Maslen said.

It has been three weeks since they packed their personal belongings in semi-trailers before being told there was a delay in receiving the funds from the sale of their property.

They are now waiting on the bank to process the loan for the purchaser of their former home.

They have been told settlement will be December 15.

“Nothing is confirmed or in writing,” Ms Maslen said.

One more cat has joined their group since they were left in housing limbo, unable to move into their new property in Cranbourne or remain in the sold property in Hampton Park.

The Maslen’s were not granted priority listing, despite the fact their rescue cats are stuck in cages in their temporary accommodation.

“The cats are unable to exercise properly which isn’t good,” Ms Maslen said.

2nd Chance Cat Rescue was founded in 2011 and is a registered not-for-profit organisation.

However, because they no longer have a permanent address, they have been unable to receive any donations.

With Christmas usually a popular time for adoption, 2nd Chance Cat Rescue have also been unable to hold adoption days or sell their charity calendars due to their belongings being inaccessible in storage.

“It ruins everything for Christmas,” Ms Maslen said.

“Though I am still fortunate myself and my cats have somewhere to stay and that we’re alright.

“We’re heartbroken and upset but taking one day at a time.”
