An accused drug trafficker allegedly found with hundreds of ecstasy tablets, bags of ice and dodgy currency has pleaded to be bailed because his first baby is about to be born.

Zeeshan Mehdi wants to be out to see the birth of his child, due in the next few weeks, while he faces charges of drug trafficking, deception and handling stolen goods.

The 32-year-old appeared by video link at Dandenong Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to apply for bail.

A police raid on his Dandenong bedroom on July 20 this year allegedly uncovered 500 MDMA pills, a “large quantity” of methamphetamine and trafficking paraphernalia including scales and a phone containing dealing messages.

Eight counterfeit $100 notes were also allegedly found, as well as allegedly stolen computer tablets, phones and real money that police say comes from trafficking.

Police said he admitted the drugs were his, but he denied knowledge of the counterfeit cash.

Mehdi is also charged with using stolen bank cards taken in a Dandenong North burglary to buy cigarettes, online gaming cards, food and drinks from nearby servos.

Police believe Mehdi poses an unacceptable risk of offending and has little regard for bail conditions.

But his defence lawyer said Mehdi “never had a greater motivation” to deal with his drug issues than the impending birth of his first baby.

He said because of the strict Stage 4 lockdown and curfew that would limit any possibility of him committing any more crimes and he should be bailed until his cases are resolved.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said Mehdi’s history suggested he posed an “enormous” risk to the community.

“His partner was heavily pregnant when this alleged offending occurred,” Ms O’Donnell said.

“(The pregnancy situation) was there a month ago.

His bail application was refused and he was remanded in custody until August 11.
