A dog has been mauled during the opening of Croydon’s new Town Square this morning.
Two dogs began attacking each other about 10.30am, just after the opening ceremony for the square finished.
Police rushed to the scene and used capsicum spray to separate the two dogs, one of whom was taken away by rangers.

The other dog has been taken by its owners to the vet for emergency treatment.
Maroondah Leader understands one of the dogs in the incident belongs to the owners of a business on the Main St shopping strip.
The dog is said to be an ‘unofficial mascot’ of the strip.

Witness Marta Makkai said the incident lasted for about a minute, with many people in the crowd of about 60 people turning away.
“Most people were in shock, they couldn’t withstand the whole scene,” she said.
“A few brave guys went to separate them, but luckily police were there to assist and they stepped in as well.”
The Town Square, between Pierson and Main streets, opened after construction began last August.
The $2 million project, which features pockets of open space, a mini clock tower and a $100,000 all-abilities toilet, has been affected by construction delays.
Maroondah Mayor Rob Steane did not comment on the incident as it is under police investigation.
But Cr Steane said police handled the situation appropriately.
“It does not detract from what was a very successful opening and Croydon Town Square looks magnificent,” he said.
Croydon police has been contacted for comment.
