A driver injured in Tuesday’s fatal three-car crash at a “notorious” intersection in Seville is continuing to fight for his life.
The driver of the blue car involved in the crash at Queens Rd and Beenak Rd about 8am on Tuesday was flown to The Alfred hospital with life-threatening injuries and in a critical condition.
A hospital spokesman said the Mooroolbark man in his late 40s remained in a critical condition on Wednesday.
The crash claimed the life of a 30-year-old Pheasant Creek woman, the driver of a green car, while a toddler and two other locals in a Toyota HiLux with an empty horse float were taken to hospital for observation.
It was one of five incidents Major Collision Unit detectives attended in a horror 24 hours on Victoria’s roads, including two other fatal crashes involving three vehicles in Somerville and Meredith.
A female driver was killed in the Sommerville collision between two cars and a truck about 3.30pm on Monday, while a female passenger was killed in the Meredith incident involving three cars about 6am on Tuesday.
Major Collision Unit detective Sergeant Daryll Out said the string of incidents were ”extremely worrying” for the unit and had stretched its resources across the state.
“It’s a dreadful trend and a lot of it is totally avoidable,” Sgt Out said.
“It’s an extremely concerning situation to be in because of the similarities in some of the collisions and then carelessness that appears in others.
“We have people dying on the roads because people have been either inattentive or careless, and people need to be more careful.”
Yarra Ranges highway patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Sands said the Seville intersection was “notorious” for accidents despite upgrades in recent years.
He said investigators believed a blue car which was travelling east on Beenak Rd failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with the green car and the HiLux with the horse float, which were travelling in opposite directions on Queens Rd.
Beenak Rd resident Tami, who didn’t give her surname, said she had seen one-to-three “nasty” crashes at the intersection each year in her 18 years living in the area.
She described the scene as “chaos” and called for an urgent fix to make the intersection safer.
“I’ve got family who live around here and a lot of friends, you don’t want to walk out to see someone you know or anybody involved in something like that,” she said.
The intersection was due to re-open late on Tuesday afternoon.
Sixteen people have died on Victoria’s roads in 2023, one higher than the 15 lives at the same time last year.
Any witnesses or anyone with information on the collisions can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
