A new playground at the former Olinda Golf Course is proving to be a big hit with families.

Parks Victoria said the new space included plenty of fun for kids of all ages, with an all-ability playground, picnic facilities, new barbecues, a dog off-lead area and toilet block.

Monbulk state Labor MP James Merlino said the nature-based regional playground had been given a big tick of approval from children.

“This beautiful playspace is a $1.8m investment into Olinda’s recreational environment and is stage one of a $7.67m transformation of this unique public space,” Mr Merlino said.

Meanwhile Knox Council has announced plans to upgrade the playground at Marie Wallace Reserve Bayswater — also known as the train park, thanks to its popular red train.

The proposed works include improving access around the red train; reinstating the little red train; extra junior and nature play features; replacing rubber surfaces and additional planting.

The council will also investigate water play opportunities near the sand play area.

Erin Mallinder, who runs the Mamma Knows East website, said the plan sounded great.

Ms Mallinder said the park was hugely popular, but in need of a refresh.

She said the big red train was its main drawcard.

“Kids love trains,” she said.

“It’s a bit of nostalgia and being in the eastern suburbs we have that Puffing Billy connection.

“My daughter for a long time didn’t think the Metro trains were real because they didn’t look like the red train.”

The community can have its say on the plan until July 30.

The works are due to start next February.
