Nikos Tavern: Ringwood East fire near Greek restaurant damages rubbish bins and van

A fire which broke out behind popular restaurant in Maroondah is believed to be suspiciously lit. Here’s what we know.

A van has been damaged and three wheelie bins destroyed in a fire outside a Greek restaurant in Ringwood East.

Maroondah detective Senior Constable Steve Reidy said the fire broke out behind Nikos Tavern at 1.30am on Monday, March 1.

Sen-Constable Reidy said the bins were set alight in and the fire then spread to a white Toyota Hiace van parked nearby.

Firefighters rushed to the Mt Dandenong Rd restaurant and extinguished the fire within half an hour.

Sen-Constable Reidy said the restaurant and nearby businesses were not impacted by the fire and there was minor damage to the van.

He said police were still investigating the cause of the fire and trying to track down anyone allegedly involved.
