Croydon: Pedestrian and speeding ute driver fined following stoush in Landale Ave

A pedestrian has been fined after hitting his head on the road in Croydon. Here’s why police believe it wasn’t the victim.

A pedestrian has been fined despite hitting his head on the road and being rushed to hospital following an altercation in a quiet Croydon street.

Maroondah highway patrol Sergeant Michael Aston said the incident occurred in Landale Ave on March 1 at 5.45pm.

Sgt Aston said the pedestrian, a 50-year-old Croydon man, was walking across the road when he became concerned about a grey Ford ute zooming towards him at high speed.

The driver of the ute, a 30-year-old Kilsyth man, stopped the car in the middle of the road and the duo had an argument.

Sgt Aston said the pedestrian allegedly made his way into the path of the ute as it drove off, and he was clipped and fell onto the road.

Paramedics and police attended the scene and the pedestrian was taken to Maroondah Hospital for observation.

Sgt Aston said officers located the driver of the grey ute a short time later while he was visiting a friend in the street.

He was fined $397 and three demerit points for careless driving, while the pedestrian was fined $83 for walking improperly on the road.

Sgt Aston said the incident was a minor one which “should never have happened”.

“Someone was injured as a result of two people who couldn’t keep their tempers in check,” he said.

“If people believe somebody is breaking the road rules or behaving in an inappropriate manner, we advise them to call 000 or their local police station, and not take matters into their own hands.”
