A 28-YEAR-OLD father-of-three will serve at least two and a half years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to robbing and assaulting three men while under the influence of ice and out on bail.

Matthew Hull, of Langwarrin, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, recklessly causing injury and theft after the incident on September 27, 2015.

The County Court last month heard that Hull alongside a then 19-year-old man, Benjamin Nagy, forced his way into an Upper Ferntree Gully home about 5.45am before being confronted by the homeowner and his housemates.

The men were involved in a vicious fight that was eventually broken up after the homeowner hit Hull with his car.

The court heard how the homeowner had a gun pointed to his head when confronted by Hull and Nagy at the property during the burglary.

The pair wore balaclavas and were armed with a double-barrelled handgun, a tomahawk and a steel bar.

Hull and his accomplice broke into a bungalow out the back of the property searching for man named “Aaron” before making off with $1500 while under the influence of ice. The vicious fight erupted as Hull was about to leave in a Mercedes van, when another housemate approached them with a sledgehammer.

At Hull’s sentencing on August 29, Judge Irene Lawson said despite showing distinct remorse for his actions after sobering up, an immediate prison term was her only choice. “I must denounce your conduct on behalf of the community,” Judge Lawson said. “You have not demonstrated whilst on bail that you have seized the opportunity to reform.”

The County Court heard Hull had previously been found guilty of aggravated burglary but was handed a suspended prison sentence before the incident in 2015 and had a history of drug abuse.
