A $75 million hotel has opened its doors at Caribbean Park in Scoresby, the latest addition to the growing “micro-city” business precinct in Melbourne’s outer east.

The Hyatt Place Melbourne Caribbean Park hotel, featuring 171 guestrooms, restaurant, bar and meeting spaces, is expected to appeal to interstate business travellers, those looking for a staycation close to home, and visitors heading to the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs.

The Spooner family has owned the land off Ferntree Gully Rd since 1945, and it’s now home to the largest and fastest growing business precinct outside of the Melbourne CBD.

It’s near the former Caribbean Gardens and Market site, which closed for good in 2020 after 55 years, with a separate company now leasing the old market building for a new venture called 2.0 Artisan Vintage Market.

Popular rollerskating rink Caribbean Rollerama also operates nearby.

Caribbean Park director Ben Spooner said the hotel’s opening was a real milestone for the precinct.

“We had a masterplan that was drawn up by our family which has held the land since 1945

that would truly grow this precinct, and especially our landholding, into a really prominent business hub,” Mr Spooner said.

He said despite the challenges of Covid over the past two years, there was no better time to be opening a hotel.

“I think people need some excitement, and need to see things happening and progressing,” he said.

“We pushed through (Covid) and are celebrating the hotel opening and international borders opening up at the same time.”

As well as catering for visitors to the business precinct, Mr Spooner said the design and comfort level of the hotel would appeal to locals looking to have a staycation or celebrate an anniversary dinner.

General manager and area vice president – Pacific for Hyatt Robert Dawson said the hotel had been specifically designed to suit the location, with a large restaurant, great meeting spaces and fitness centre.

Mr Dawson said along with catering for the business market, it would also be a great location for weddings.

It’s not the only hotel to open in Melbourne’s suburbs recently, with a Mercure Hotel opening above a new Bunnings in Doncaster, the PARKROYAL Monash Melbourne opening in Clayton, and The Sebel Ringwood also welcoming guests.

Hyatt Place Melbourne at Caribbean Park is at 38 Dalmore Drive, Scoresby.
