A Croydon North man busted with a DIY dope lab in his bedroom and more than 8 kgs of marijuana plants claimed he used his crop to make edibles for people with cancer.

A man busted growing marijuana in the bedroom of his Croydon North home says he uses it to make edibles for people with cancer, a court has heard.

Gregory Carter, 46, pleaded guilty to trafficking cannabis, cultivating cannabis and drug possession in the Ringwood Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Carter’s Croydon North home was raided by police on October 11 last year, who found 10 mature marijuana plants, five small plants and 23 juvenile plants in a DIY bedroom lab.

The electricity supply had also been rewired to bypass the grid to power the lab.

Detectives also found magic mushrooms and a 12 gauge shotgun round.

Carter was not home at the time of the raid but later handed himself into police.

The court heard Carter, who is unemployed, suffered a workplace injury and used the illict drugs to manage his pain.

He also said all the plants were for personal use or to trade with friends and he did not sell drugs.

Carter claimed to give away edibles to people with cancer to help manage their pain.

He was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order.

All the drugs were ordered to be forfeited and destroyed.
