THE Greens have announced a $100 million Rowville Railway line plan in a bid to fasttrack vital public transport to the outer east.

The package has been described as an election priority and would be designed with the party’s approval with hopes to have the heavy rail “shovel-ready” by 2022.

The Greens made the move as they hope to hold the balance of power after next month’s state election.

Funding for the project would come from the Federal Government’s $475 million budget for a rail link to Monash University.

The Greens say the new line must extend to Rowville however, where four out of five residents rely on their cars to get to work.

The money would be used to create comprehensive technical designs with approvals, and a business case with cost benefit analysis.

Planning will also include looking at connections to the Cranbourne/Pakenham Line, the Alamein Line and proposed Suburban Rail Loop.

Greens State MP for southeast Metropolitan, Nina Springle, said the pledge was a “no-brainer”.

Proposed suburban Rail Loop for Melbourne

“I constantly hear from residents in my electorate how desperately they need a rail link so they can have access to decent and reliable public transport to get them where they need to go,” Ms Springle said.

“Demand for decent public transport is skyrocketing, and with major projects such as the Suburban Rail Loop slated, we need a logical, well thought out plan for the future of Melbourne’s metro system.”

The Rowville Rail plan has been on the table for more than 50 years with a major population boom placing significant strain on the limited public transport system in the outer east.

Infrastructure Victoria expects the project would cost as much as $10 billion and take five years to build.
