A EUROPEAN supermarket giant looking to crack the Australian market is set to open its first store down under.
German supermarket giant Kaufland, the world’s fourth-largest retailer, has named The Eastridge site at 266-268 Maroondah Highway Chirnside Park as its preferred location.
They will compete for shoppers against Coles, Woolies and fellow German company Aldi, all also at Chirnside Park shopping centre.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne has appointed a planning advisory committee to consider proposals by the supermarket chain, which is circling locations in Dandenong, Epping, Oakleigh South, Coolaroo and Mornington.
The 21ha Maroondah Highway site is on the market, with expressions of interest on the property sought.
But commercial real estate agents has the site listed as “final bids under consideration” on its website.
On its Australian website, Kaufland is advertising for staff.
Yarra Ranges Social and Economic Development acting director James Collins said the council would be sending in a submission to the committee this month.
“The intent of the change to planning provisions at the site is to facilitate the development and use of a supermarket, including packaged liquor sales, a small number of ancillary speciality shops and carparking,” Mr Collins said.
Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning spokesman Michael Pollock said the advisory committee’s assessment would consider each proposal and if approved the development would go ahead.
“Ultimately the advisory committee will make a recommendation to the planning minister, who will make the final decision on the proposed planning scheme changes,” he said.
CRBE real estate agent Mark Wizel did not respond to Lilydale & Yarra Valley Leader before deadline.
The community can make submissions online about the proposal until 5pm on October 26.
