Eastland’s plan for more shelter in Town Square delayed until 2019

EASTLAND has put its plans for more shelter in its Town Square precinct on the backburner with centre management confirming the project had been delayed until the first half of 2019.

The centre revealed it would install two “stylish mirrored canopies” and complete other minor amenities works in the square exclusively to Maroondah Leader in May.

The canopies were to be fitted with integrated heating and lighting and glass screening, to allow diners to enjoy outdoor dining in the square regardless of the weather.

At the time, general manager Greg Balmforth said construction would begin in June and be completed by the end of August.

But with no sign of works in the precinct last week, centre management confirmed the project had been delayed until the first half of 2019.

Mr Balmforth said the centre was still committed to the project but it was “too early to share specific timings” for its delivery.

“The decision to adjust our proposed timings for these works has allowed us to provide additional attention to design detail and ensure construction is delivered at the highest standard with minimal impact on the surrounding retailers and our Eastland community,” he said.

The total cost of the project is unclear but Maroondah Leader understands the works were set to cost more than $1-million.

Meanwhile, The Groove Train will replace the former Balsamic restaurant as part of a new dining area outside Hoyts Cinemas.

Mr Balmforth said another yet-to-be-named restaurant would also open as part of the refreshed space, which is currently under construction.
The second restaurant and the precinct’s opening date is expected to be confirmed shortly.
