Yarra Ranges highway patrol Sergeant David McIlfatrick said “very large” pine tree fell across the road and landed on top of Mr Herbert-Allan’s car.

“The tree has come across the road and hit the top of the car as it’s passing underneath and the car has continued on and collided with another tree,” Sgt McIlfatrick said.

“It’s just really tragic and extremely unlucky the car was there at the time the tree fell.”

Close friend Paul Ryan described the Wandin North man’s death as “a real tragedy”.

“He was such a wonderful kind hearted person who would do anything to help others out,” Mr Ryan told the Sunday Herald Sun.

“He was always the life of a gathering with his witty jokes,” he said. “A true car enthusiast as he was with his remote control cars as well.”
