Parents are calling for an urgent upgrade to a Boronia aquatic centre, where children are being pulled out of swimming lessons because the water is too cold.

Knox Leisureworks was forced to close several pools over Melbourne Cup weekend because water temperatures were “cooler than normal”.

Several pools were also closed last year and swimming lessons cancelled for several days because the water was too cold.

Parents have now called on Knox Council to upgrade the pools.

Boronia mum Stephanie Brain said she had pulled her son out of swimming lessons at the centre about 18 months ago, because the water was too cold.

“The pools are so old and outdated,” she said.

“The main concern is the temperature. I had to stop my son’s swimming lessons because he was just freezing.”

Other parents reported similar experiences on Knox Leader’s Facebook page.

“Water temperature is definitely not consistent and facilities are outdated,” Isabella Van Zuylen Tosti-Guerra said.

“We cancelled our lessons last year as the kids were going blue with the water in main pool being too cold,” Michelle Slade Campbell said.

The centre on November 3 that due to “unforeseen circumstances” the 50m pool, “warm water” pool and program pool were closed with swimming lessons cancelled. The pools reopened two days later.

A Knox Council report released in May noted Knox Leisureworks had potential structural and geotechnical issues needing further investigation.

The report said outcomes of the council’s aquatic plan, due to be completed next month, and building condition audits would inform a decision on the future of the centre in its current location.

“The centre is ageing and has an increasing need for significant renewal and capital works to maintain the facility,” it said.

The report said Knox Leisureworks was a highly valued community facility that attracted more than 500,000 people each year.

Knox Council did not respond to Knox Leader’s request for comment.
