A “horrifying” police chase through Melbourne’s north ended in an innocent family of four being rushed to hospital on January 2.

Greensborough police pursued the erratic driver of a white Mazda CX9 after it was spotted speeding and overtaking oncoming cars in the opposite lane on Plenty Rd, Preston about 7.30pm.

The 29-year-old Heidelberg West man sped through the backstreets of Preston at “at least double the speed limit” to flee police.

He then went through a stop sign and ploughed into a vehicle, which had two five-year-old boys inside, at the intersection of Mansfield and Station St, Thornbury about 7.42pm.

One of the boys was taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the mother suffered a broken collarbone.

The family have since been released from hospital.

The driver was arrested, charged and remanded.

Acting Senior Sergeant Ashley Hodges said he would be facing more than 20 criminal charges in court.

“We are horrified at this type of driving,” he said.

“The fact someone was willing to take these sorts of risks on the road is scary.”

Acting Sen-Sgt Hodges said it “is never worth the risk” to try and evade police.

“Normally when people try to evade police it’s just a minor offence they are running from,” he said.

“But it can end up in life-changing injuries for innocent victims — it is not worth it.

“The driver’s car was on fire and the family was trapped in their car so they needed emergency services to get them out — there is no good outcome and is traumatic for everyone involved.”

Acting Sen-Sgt Hodges urged any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to phone Greensborough police station on 8432 0200.
