A speeding driver put lives at risk by travelling the wrong way down a freeway to evade police this morning.

Police spotted the red Honda sedan speeding east on the Monash Freeway about 2.55am and tried to intercept it.

But the driver stopped on the freeway near the High Street Rd exit and reversed a short distance before turning around and travelling the wrong way towards Malvern East.

Police did not follow it for safety reasons, with the car leaving the freeway at the High Street Rd ramp.

The vehicle was dumped in the Eric Raven Reserve carpark and the driver fled on foot.

Anyone with information or has dashcam footage of the vehicle travelling on the freeway is urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
