A SUNBURY fish and chip shop has nabbed the catch of the year hook, line and sinker.

Seafood on Evans recently took home the Victorian people’s choice award at this year’s Australian Fish and Chips Awards.

Tony Moussa, who has owned the Evans St store for 18 years, told the Leader his entire team chipped in for the win.

“We’re a small town competing with all the other big places. I was ecstatic,” he said.

“Someone else nominated us. I didn’t even know about it until we found out we’d been nominated.”

Mr Moussa said his store’s ongoing popularity had been, in part, because of its ability to cater to coeliac and gluten free customers.

“No one has been sick for 18 years. No one does gluten free like we do. It’s a huge thing for coeliacs,” he said.

He said he ordered a special brand of gluten free batter to make sure the food was safe for everyone.

Rounding out the top three were Captain Gummy’s Fish and Chips in Frankston and Coburg North’s Blu by Australian Seafood.

Blu by Australian Seafood also took out the top prize in the judged category.

Entrants were marked on service, taste, presentation and menu choice.

Mr Moussa said the secret to great fish and chips was all in the ingredients.

“Fish and Chips are an Australian icon. You don’t want it to be greasy and (you want) nice, fresh fish and clean oil,” he said.

“Do it from the heart. The most important thing is you do it from the heart.”

He also paid tribute to his hardworking team of staff.

“I couldn’t have done it without them.”
