VICTORIANS love their fish and chips, and the competition for who makes the best is fierce.
We travelled around town to find Melbourne’s best fish and chipperies, and after hundreds of nominations from Victorians on heraldsun.com.au and social media, we’ve also collated some of your top picks for whose batter is better.
Seaford Fish and Chips was a popular choice among readers, who really like that the shop still hand cuts its chips.

“If they don’t hand their cut their chips, they don’t rate. I’ll drive miles to find one of the rare few that still do. There is a good little shop in Seaford that still do them that are brilliant,” reader Tony said.
“Seaford fish and chips has had the same formula for over 50 years. The shop is bulletproof,” Kevin Richards said.
“After 40 years and no fancy name to go with it, people come from far and wide to Seaford for the best fish &chips in Melbourne.”
Hand cut chips were clearly an important feature among fish and chip fanatics, with Alex’s Take Away in Altona West and Jim’s Seafood and Grill in Glenroy both offering the special touch.
“(Alex’s) are simply the best! One of the few remaining Fish and Chippos that still hand cut their chips,” Mark said.
“Jim’s Seafood and Grill has the best service and quality fish & chips you will find. Hand cut golden brown chips and the freshest of fish,” Richard said.
For other Victorians, the setting is just as important as the taste - and for reader Yvonne Lawless, you couldn’t find a better spot than on the beach at Flinders.
Flinders Fish & Chips do amazing grilled blue grenadier and chips. I highly recommend it, we always eat ours down at the Flinders pier,” Ms Lawless said.
