A Sunbury bub has given his parents their first true test after he was born on the side of the road.

Jessica Nix and Nathan Shorten were in an ambulance on the way to hospital when their little guy decided he just couldn’t wait.

He was born on the side of the road near a sign marking Sunbury’s claim as ‘birthplace of the Ashes’ in the early hours of October 25.

Ms Nix said she’d been experiencing contractions since 4am, but thought it was too early for labour.

“I wasn’t due until the first week of November. I tried to go back to sleep and waited around for an hour, but then I called my Mum,” she said.

By the time her mother Shari arrived, the contractions were just minutes apart. Emergency operators told the family to brace for a home birth.

They decided to call an ambulance.

“It all happened very quickly. As soon as I knew the ambulance was here, I was really relieved. Being in the ambulance I was safe,” she said.

“I felt like I wasn’t going to make it to the hospital.”

The ambulance only got to the bottom of Goonawarra hill before Hudson came into the world weighing six pounds.

Ms Nix said she was well looked after throughout the whole process.

“When I went to the Sunshine Hospital, they kept calling him the roadside baby,” she said.

“This is definitely a story I’m going to tell at his 21st birthday.”

Hudson’s already made a big mark on the family. Mum said older sister Brylee was proud as punch.

“She was a bit shocked while it was all happening and asking a lot of questions, Ms Nix said.

“But she’s very helpful. She keeps telling me how much she loves her brother.”
