Father-of-four crashes into fence because of ‘big’ spider

A dad-of-four who crashed his BMW into a fence in Jacana and had to be capsicum sprayed by police when he bolted in fear has told a court it was all because of a “big” spider, showing a photo of its web as proof.

A father-of-four who crashed into a fence because there was a “big” spider in his car has been handed a good behaviour bond in court.

Eiad Almohamad was so frightened by the creepy crawly that he lost control of his BMW and hit a fence in Sunset Blvd, Jacana on October 5 last year.

But the terrified dad refused to leave his name and details with the property’s occupant and had to be capsicum sprayed by police as he tried to run away.

Almohamad faced Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to careless driving and not giving a name and address.

Police prosecutor First Constable Abdul Fakhouri told the court Almohamad asked the homeowner not to call the police as he spoke to them just after the accident at 4.50am.

But, unable to get any further information out of the driver, the occupant called police for help.

Almohamad tried to get in his car and drive away but the BMW sedan was so damaged that it wouldn’t start.

First Constable Fakhouri said officers arrived at 5.13am and Almohamad ran away, leading to a foot chase.

“Police requested the accused to stop on numerous occasions,” he told the court.

“He hid behind a car in Bates Crt, Jacana (and) refused to comply with police direction.”

Almohamad then tried to jump over another fence to get away and officers deployed OC spray to affect the arrest.

The court heard Almohamad told police: “I lost control and hit a fence because there was a spider in the car.”

Representing himself with an interpreter, he told the court it was a “big one” and showed the magistrate a photo of the spider’s web.

He also said he didn’t know he had to stay at the scene.

Magistrate Abigail Burchill told Almohamad it didn’t make sense for him to run away because of a spider.

“As absurd as what your reason is about the spider … the lengths police had to go to stop you makes this more serious,” she said.

“It took a lot of effort for police to stop you.

“It’s very obvious you had to stay, the police were after you to stop.”

Almohamad escaped conviction and was given a six month good behaviour bond.
