Doncaster homeowners complain of dust from construction site

A Doncaster couple was left fuming after they returned home from an overseas trip to find their balcony covered in dust from a nearby construction site. They fear the problem will get worse as work ramps up.

Angry Doncaster homeowners say dust from a neighbouring construction is being poorly managed.

Work started recently on a 12-storey building on the corner of Doncaster and Elgar roads but with the excavation phase still underway existing apartment-owners say construction has already caused problems.

Delta Property Group is developing the site which will include 161 apartments and a three-level basement carpark.

Karl Bresky’s sixth-floor apartment in Panorama, on the corner of Doncaster and Tram roads, directly overlooks the site where the 38m tower is being built.

Mr Bresky said when he and wife Elisabeth returned from a six-week trip to Europe recently they found their balcony covered in dust.

And he found they weren’t alone: “Everybody on our side had the same problem.”

Mr Bresky, who asked Manningham Council at its January meeting what could be done about the problem, said he wasn’t the only one who’d spoken out.

“We complained and someone sent a letter to the council but they haven’t done anything,” he said.

Mr Bresky said last week he was still waiting for a response from the council but feared the problem would only get worse.

“Once they start building they’ll use a lot of concrete and concrete dust is very dangerous,” he said.

The council’s acting director of city planning and community Lee Robson said the council’s approvals process required builders and developers to provide a plan on preventing excessive dust pollution.

“Council regularly conducts construction site inspections to ensure builders and developers are compliant with their construction management plan,” he said.

Homeowners can also report dust problems to the EPA on 1300 372 842 or at epa.vic.gov.au.

Delta Property Group didn’t respond to a request for comment.
