Motorists could lose another carpark in the heart of bustling Box Hill to a 25-storey tower that would bring hundreds more people to the suburb.

Plans to turn the gravel carpark at 31-35 Prospect St into a mixed-use building, containing 194 apartments, office space, shops and cafes are being advertised by Whitehorse Council.

Axion Development Pty’s application for the $66 million build comes one month after the council approved another 25-storey building comprising 194 apartments be built in place of a public carpark in the same street at 9-11 Prospect St.

Both sites sit alongside the metro rail line, just a street from Box Hill Central, and are currently used as paid public carparks.

As the land is located within the Commercial 1 Zone in Whitehorse Planning Scheme, Axion Development Pty is having to apply to use the site for housing, as well as to build the tower.

The developer is also seeking a reduction in the carparking required for a build of its size.

It is proposing to provide 199 car spaces, 13 motorcycle spaces and 82 bike spaces for the 194 apartments, 1310 sqm of office space, retail and cafe space.

The apartments would include 32 one-bedroom, 150 two-bedroom and 12 three bedroom.

The developer has been working with council officers on the proposal for at least 10 months.

It has already reduced plans for the southern side of the building by three storeys to tackle the council’s concerns about the building’s overshadowing.

A developer is also working with the council on plans for a 30-storey mixed-use building for apartments, office and retail space on the site opposite at 34-36 Prospect St.
