RSPCA Victoria: free cat adoption, hundreds of cats at Burwood centre

If you’re considering adding a furbaby to your family, you’ll want to pounce on this deal, with adoption fees scratched for 1000 moggies so they are given new forever homes.

If you’ve been considering adding a furry friend to the family, now is the purrfect time.

Up to 1000 cats are available for free adoption as RSPCA Victoria desperately tries to reduce an overwhelming number of moggies received after Christmas.

Hundreds are in care at the RSPCA centre on Burwood Hwy in Burwood East.

RSPCA Victoria’s facilities are operating beyond capacity, and it’s being forced to outsource temporary care for cats, with more than 1400 cats in its care.

Breeding season meant the animal welfare organisation took on almost 1200 cats in each of December and November 2018, compared to 531 in September.

Chief executive Dr Liz Walker said the high intake was only expected to continue through the warmer months.

“We desperately need to find forever homes for all of them as soon as possible and to make way for the many more cats and kittens that will come into our care in the coming months,” she said.

The organisation is also advising cat owners to vaccinate their pets, after it received a high number of cats with the panleukopenia virus.

The rehabilitation required before sick cats can be adopted means they have to stay at the RSPCA for weeks. The increasing number of cats being seized from animal cruelty is also putting considerable strain on resources.

Free cat adoption is available at all RSPCA Victoria facilities including Petbarn stores until January 31.

The promotion excludes kittens under the age of four months.
