Firefighters found the garage fully engulfed in fire, threatening the rear of the home.
Two people were found asleep inside the house and were evacuated to safety.
They were assessed for possible smoke inhalation by Ambulance Victoria paramedics.
Two other occupants of the residence evacuated before MFB crews arrived.
Neighbouring properties were also evacuated as a precaution.
A 4 x 100kg LPG gas cylinder inside the garage is believed to be the cause of the gas smell.
The garage was also filled with mechanical equipment.
“Access was extremely difficult and dangerous,” MFB spokeswoman Louise Cannon said.
“Firefighters used water sprays to try to cool the cylinders.”
The fire was declared under control at 10am this morning.
MFB fire investigators will attend the scene this morning to determine a cause.
