Lawyers were left confused in a Mildura courtroom on Thursday after two showed up to represent the same accused.
Jamal Johnson, who is facing charges relating to alleged aggravated home invasion, armed robbery, attempted armed robbery as well as firearms and assault-related offences, appeared before court via video link from remand.
The confusion began when two lawyers who knew nothing about one another both logged onto the link to represent Mr Johnson.
Deepening the bizarre situation was the fact the accused had had a meeting with one of the soliciters in the morning before his appearance and failed to inform them of his other representation.
Magistrate Patrick Southey urged Mr Johnson to choose one of the lawyers, to which Mr Johnson replied “whoever, I don’t care”.
After being assured by Mr Southey he wouldn’t “hurt their feelings”, Mr Johnson elected Nadia Giorgianni of Giorgianni & Liang Lawyers to represent him.
Once the confusion was ironed out, Mr Johnson’s case was adjourned.
He is due to make his next court appearance on April 30.
