A Mildura man hauled before court on car theft, firearms and drug charges made a dramatic attempt to escape custody after he was denied bail.
Danny King, 29, was denied bail by Magistrate Patrick Southey on several car theft, firearms, and drug possession charges at Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Mr King pleaded with Mr Southey asking for one more chance saying, “I didn’t do all of those things. Jail is going to make me even worse.”
Mr Southey was not moved by his words saying, “I am not sure any magistrate would grant him bail. The total picture is of a man that is completely out of control.”
After getting up and feigning compliance with prison officers, Mr King took a daring leap over the prisoner dock, deftly evading two prison guards and bolted for freedom.
He made it out the door into the lobby before he was apprehended by police.
Mr King had been denied bail relating to a crime spree that had taken place over the past week where it alleged he stole several cars, firearms, discharged a weapon, had possession of methylamphetamine and committed aggravated burglary.
He is due to return to court on June 19.
