A Mildura man raided the same property twice in one night, firing a weapon and leaving the occupants of the house fleeing for their lives.

Jahmal Johnson, 27, fronted Mildura County Court in Koori Court on Monday to plead guilty to several charges including home invasion with a firearm, common law assault and reckless endangerment.

The court heard Johnson and an unnamed co-accused first robbed the Hornsey Park house, making away with $3000 cash, credit cards, ID documents and keys to both the house and a motor vehicle.

Johnson returned with his crew hours later, and the occupants of the house fled outside in fear for their life. It was then police claimed Johnson fired a single shot from a weapon through a glass window on the property.

The court heard Johnson, who was smoking two grams of meth daily in the lead up to the incident, had a serious heart condition as well.

His family told the court that Johnson had been in a coma after surgery to treat the condition.

‘He was in a coma for weeks,” Johnson’s mother told the court.

Since being incarcerated, Johnson told Judge Fran Dalziel that he had begun mentoring young Indigenous youth and planned to continue to do that once he was released from prison.

“I’ve never had a job in my life. I want to do as much with MDAS (Mallee District Aboriginal Services) as I can when I get out,” Johnson told the court.

Johnson also told the court his life had gone off the rails after his sister died from a drug overdose.

“I remember talking to her on the Saturday and she was preaching to me about staying off of drugs and a week later she died from an overdose,” Johnson told the court.

Judge Dalziel encouraged Johnson to look forwards, and not backwards, once he was released from prison.

Johnson will be sentenced on a date yet to be determined in the County Court.
