A Mildura thug brutally assaulted a man with a baseball bat before fleeing with his girlfriend, a court has heard.
Lincoln Floyd fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court from remand where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges including common law assault and wilful damage following a violent incident that took place just days before Christmas last year.
The court heard Floyd arrived at a Mildura property on December 23 brandishing a blue baseball bat and launched a barrage of verbal abuse towards the victim.
The matter escalated when Floyd struck the man twice in the legs with the bat, before punching him twice in the head, drawing blood and then fleeing with his girlfriend.
Floyd was found by police at Ritchies IGA in Mildura on December 31 and arrested. During his recorded police interview the court heard Floyd gave a no comment interview, only telling police he didn’t know the victim.
The court heard Floyd, while he was in custody, had been caught on CCTV damaging an airconditioning vent while he was awaiting an interview with his lawyer.
Initially Floyd denied he had damaged the property, before he was presented with the CCTV.
It was revealed in court that the pre-Christmas assault involving the baseball bat had occurred because he believed the victim had been selling his partner drugs.
Other evidence given in Floyd’s defence was his rudimentary understanding of the English language and that he intended to move to Adelaide once he had served his sentence.
Magistrate Patrick Southey condemned Floyd’s offending, calling it “brutal” and “appalling” before adding he narrowly avoided a harsher sentence by entering a guilty plea.
“If you hadn’t pleaded guilty, I would have sentenced you to six months behind bars,” Mr Southey said.
Floyd was sentenced to 127 days behind bars, reckoned as time served, and is expected to be released on Friday.
