A Mildura man has seen his plan to get his court matter “over and done with” blow up in his face after the sitting magistrate insisted he receive some legal advice.

Isaac Hill planned to represent himself in the Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday as he faced charges including theft and breaching a community corrections order.

Magistrate Megan Aumair asked Mr Hill if he had received any legal advice, to which he replied, “Nah. I don’t need any.”

Ms Aumair said she would stand the matter down so he could receive some legal advice.

“I’ll just plead not guilty. I want to get it over and done with,” Mr Hill said.

However, upon being informed pleading not guilty would not mean the matter was dealt with, Mr Hill changed his plea.

“Fine, I’ll plead guilty,” he told the court.

Ms Aumair said she was going to insist that the matter be stood down until the afternoon.

“Do what you want – I wont be here,” he replied as he stormed out of the court, the doors slamming behind him.

Despite his protestations, Mr Hill did return to court after receiving some legal advice.

He could be heard muttering to his duty lawyer, “I’d rather be locked up”.

The matters were adjourned and Mr Hill is set to reappear at Mildura Magistrates Court on April 16.
