A Mildura real estate agent’s criminal double life was exposed in court, as she attempted to blame her then 19-year-old boyfriend for getting involved in the meth scene, a court has heard.
Danielle Flechsig, 28, fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to drug possession and trafficking charges, after a police raid at her house.
Flechsig, supported in court by her parents, came under scrutiny after her then boyfriend was caught with drugs and drug dealing paraphernalia when he was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by police.
A subsequent search of Flechsig’s home uncovered nearly three grams of meth and a mobile phone she refused to unlock for police.
When later questioned, Flechsig refused to answer investigators’ questions, but police analysis of her phone revealed Google searches relating to cutting methamphetamine.
Her lawyer argued she had no history of drug use before or after her relationship, suggesting she was manipulated by her much younger boyfriend.
The court heard Flechsig was financially invested in the relationship as well, paying off the debts of her co-accused.
That argument was dismissed outright by Magistrate Patrick Southey.
“I don’t see the utility of trying to lay the blame at the feet of a 19-year-old. That’s the risk you take, if you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas,” Mr Southey said.
The court heard Flechsig was “extremely remorseful”, supported by reference letters attesting to her character.
“This is not a lack of Judgement, this was over a sustained period of time,” Mr Southey said.
“I take into account her plea of guilty and the fact she is remorseful. I need to send a message to you and others that trafficking ice will not be tolerated.”
Flechsig was convicted and fined $1,500.
