A Mildura man is accused of ransacking a hospital and a backpackers’ guest house during an alleged brazen crime spree, a court has heard.
The Mildura Magistrates’ Court heard Daniel Carter had been loitering around the Mildura Base Public Hospital on the night of December 16.
In the early hours of the following morning, police alleged Mr Carter stole a laundry list of items including three mobile phones, multiple sets of keys, a swipe card and items from staff member’s lockers as he forced entry into various locations around the hospital including the pathology department.
On December 18, Mr Carter allegedly walked into the TV room of Riverside Guest House, a backpackers style accommodation, through an unlocked door brandishing a flick knife.
Police claimed Mr Carter allegedly stole a pair of Nike slides, food, drinks, $1330 cash, hard drive, six watches and other items.
Later that day, he allegedly stole a mountain bike from a Walnut Ave address.
Police spotted Mr Carter, allegedly in possession of the stolen bike, on the corner of 13th St and Lemon Ave and arrested him on December 19.
A further search of an address Mr Carter said he was staying at allegedly uncovered several of the stolen items.
During his bail application, Mr Carter asked Magistrate Patrick Southey if he could explain why he hadn’t been attending his court ordered corrections appointments.
“I haven’t been able to attend corrections the last couple of weeks because I was taken by people and tortured,” Mr Carter said before adding he wanted to get into rehab and straighten his life out.
Mr Southey denied bail, saying Mr Carter was a considerable risk, and he hadn’t demonstrated exceptional circumstances.
“You haven’t demonstrated exceptional circumstances. It’s a strong case. It seems you could be looking at a lengthy prison sentence. Bail is denied,” Mr Southey said.
Mr Carter is next set to appear in court on January 30.
