A Mildura mum collided with police vehicles during a high-speed chase on the wrong side of a busy road and stole thousands of dollars’ worth of items from multiple stores, a court has heard.
Felicia Kirby, 41, fronted Koori Court in Mildura where she pleaded guilty and was jailed for four months on multiple charges including dangerous driving, shop theft, possessing methamphetamine and recklessly exposing an emergency worker by driving.
Kirby drove a Mazda CX9 on footpaths, nature strips and on the wrong side of the road through busy streets while being chased by police.
She was ultimately arrested at Red Cliffs after clipping one police car and colliding with another during the chase.
Kirby stole thousands of dollars worth of items from Coles, Rebel Sport, Dan Murphy’s, Bunnings, TK Maxx, and Jaycar locations across the state and stole more than 25 bottles of Jack Daniels from multiple BWS stores on several occasions across Sunraysia.
Kirby admitted during the Koori Court hearing that the majority of her offending was to feed her worsening methamphetamine habit.
Leading Senior Constable Kristen Simm said Kirby’s actions endangered officers and the public.
“That kind of conduct has a significant impact on police members who come to work every day,” Sen-Constable Simm said.
“Ms Kirby knew she was wanted by police and continued to flee … at significant risk to the rest of the community,” she said.
Magistrate Patrick Southey said Kirby’s driving offences were so bad, her rampant shoplifting was almost being forgotten about and said had she not pleaded guilty, he would have sentenced her to at least six months imprisonment.
“Your driving was outrageous … extremely dangerous. Otherwise your driving history is not so bad,” Mr Southey said.
“(It) is so serious, we are almost overlooking the huge amount of shoplifting charges you have pleaded guilty to.”
Kirby was sentenced to four months behind bars in total and with 33 days reckoned as pre-sentence detention, she will likely be released in mid March 2025.
