A stressed out IT worker trying to restore systems during a global outage has been clocked speeding more than 50km/h over the limit after hitting the bottle, a court has heard.
Hendrik Kleyn fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to charges of speeding and drink driving.
The court was told Kleyn had been driving down Fifteenth St on July 26 at 8.50pm after working to fix more than 600 devices affected by a major outage.
The incident impacted about 8.5 million Windows devices worldwide.
Police pulled Kleyn over after recording his Ford Ranger at 134km/h on an 80km/h road. A subsequent breath test showed a blood alcohol reading of 0.064.
“I opened it up, I don’t really know how fast I was going,” Kleyn told police when questioned.
Police impounded the vehicle on the spot.
Kleyn explained to the court that he had been under immense stress following the outage and had just found out he was going to be a father.
“I didn’t set out to do anything stupid, your honour,” Kleyn said.
Magistrate Michael Coghlan suspended Kleyn’s licence for a total of 12 months and gave him a $990.40 fine.
