A South Australian FIFO worker has been busted with a stash of cocaine and cannabis in one of Mildura’s most troubled and disadvantaged streets.
Braiden Hemming fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court to plead guilty to charges including possession of cannabis and possession of cocaine.
In June, Hemming was seen by police leaving a Hornsey Park address in a Ford Ranger, past midnight, from a house police described as “known for drug dealing”.
When pulled over, Hemming’s “overly chatty” and “too helpful” behaviour raised suspicions, prompting a search of his vehicle.
The officers uncovered nearly 22g of cocaine and five grams of cannabis, and a pocket knife, along with ziploc bags.
The court heard Hemming claimed the cocaine was for personal use and he denied any inference that the drugs were for trafficking.
He told police the ziploc bags were so he could keep track of what he was taking.
Magistrate Patrick Southey described Hornsey Park, the street Hemming was busted in as one of the most disadvantaged in the region.
“It’s the most troubled, disadvantaged public housing street in Mildura,” Mr Southey said.
Hemming, originally from the Mornington Peninsula, who is employed by a mining company and travels between South Australia and the Northern Territory regularly for work was convicted and fined $1640.
