Mildura Rural City Council says it’s in the early stages of an investigation after neighbours raised concerns about burning of native vegetation and trees at a Birdwoodton property at the weekend.
Country Fire Authority crews attended the property on Sunday, but it’s understood burning off activity was witnessed throughout the weekend.
Photos of thick smoke were captured by witnesses.
A council spokesman said it was an ongoing investigation.
“Council received reports in relation to this matter over the weekend and is currently in the early stages of the investigation,” the spokesman said.
“Given this is an ongoing investigation Council is unable to provide further detail at this point.”
A CFA spokesman said four vehicles from the Merbein brigade attended on Sunday, declaring the scene under control 11 minutes later.
“CFA responded at 11.05 to reports of a burn-off that required extinguishing,” the spokesman said.
“On arrival, crews found five burn piles producing large plumes of smoke, which were broken apart and monitored.”
The Fire Danger Period is not yet in place in District 18, but it’s recommended property owners call their council to check on local laws and regulations surrounding burn-offs at this time of year.
