Regional Victorians dreaming of heading north for some sunshine have been urged to consider taking the family to Mildura.
Some Mildura accommodation providers reported an increase inquiries this week after travel around regional Victoria was given the all-clear.
But there were still “plenty” of rooms available and families were being told it wasn’t too late to make a school holidays booking.
Mildura Plaza Motor Inn co-owner Sandy Bock said despite a tenfold increase in calls this week, only about a quarter of her rooms were booked on Thursday night.
She said in previous years, the coming weeks would have been fully booked in advance, due to school holidays and Mildura’s country music festival.
“There’s still a lot of accommodation in Mildura,” she said.
Ms Bock said families visiting the region enjoyed attractions such as Woodsies Gem Shop, the water play park, roller skating and go-karts.
Some of those making bookings this week would ordinarily be bound for theme parks on the Gold Coast.
“We’ve had a couple of those that normally go to Queensland this time of year with their family,” Ms Bock said.
“They’ve decided to come out this way because there’s lots to do in Mildura.”
Mildura’s weather is another key appeal, with temperatures in the 20s the norm during late September.
Quality Hotel Mildura Grand managing director Baljinder Sandhu said there was a big turnaround in interest this week.
He said people from other regional towns were showing an interest in getting out of their houses after being stuck at home for weeks.
Mr Sandhu said the interest up until last week had just been limited to essential workers.
“Before it was like dead, but now we are seeing some momentum definitely from Echuca, Bendigo, Ballarat,” he said.
Mr Sandhu, whose hotel joins onto the Feast Street dining area, said there were plenty of places to get a good meal or coffee when visiting Mildura.
Big 4 Mildura Getaway co-owner Michael Curran said there was a surge of bookings on Wednesday after it was announced travel rules would be eased.
“That was the busy day and they were all happy to move again,” he said.
