Mildura could receive 30 to 40mm of rain if thunderstorms develop during an expected deluge on Saturday.
But it may put a dampener on those hoping to head outdoors for the first weekend of eased restrictions.
The Bureau of Meteorology was forecasting 15 to 35mm and the chance of a thunderstorm in Mildura on Saturday, possibly with large hail in the afternoon and evening.
Bureau duty forecaster Christie Johnson said the rain total would be influenced by any storm activity.
She said it could be in the 10 to 20mm range, but with thunderstorms it might push 30 to 40mm.
The maximum was forecast to be 23 degrees, with a “sticky” feel due to humidity and gusty winds.
Ms Johnson said the showers could start just after dawn or midmorning.
“It will be coming in from the northwest, so Mildura will be one of the first places to see it in the state,” Ms Johnson said.
“Probably in the morning we’ll start to see it in Mildura and then into the Mallee and the rest of northwest Victoria in the afternoon.”
The broader Mildura region has battled drought in recent years, producing tough conditions for farmers as well as brutal dust storms.
But decent rain in April and August has meant more rainfall has been recorded in 2020 than either of the past two years.
