A Melbourne University graduate who “protested” and refused to sign bail variations that would have stopped her from travelling overseas has appeared in court … from overseas.

Ella Noorian, a University of Melbourne alumni, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on an array of charges.

The court heard Ms Noorian did not sign a bail variation which would have stopped her from leaving the country at a previous hearing, resulting in a warrant for her arrest.

On Wednesday, she appeared in court via video link claiming she was overseas and would not be returning to Australia until February.

Magistrate Brett Sonnet said Ms Noorian had “protested” the bail changes last time in court.

Mr Sonnet cancelled the warrant for her arrest for not signing the bail variation and extended her bail.

Ms Noorian said she was suffering from physical and mental health issues.

She previously worked as a researcher at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health in Parkville.

Ms Noorian attended Melbourne University from 2015 to 2018, studying medicine.

She will next appear in court on April 15, 2024.
