The brother of infamous Bourke St Killer James Gargasoulas stole driver’s licences to conceal his identity so he could find accommodation and get off the streets.
Angelo Gargasoulas appeared via video link at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday on several charges including drug possession, trafficking, and dealing with stolen property – namely two driver’s licences.
His brother James was sentenced to life in prison with a non parole period of 46 years after he killed six people and injured dozens more when he drove a car down Bourke Street Mall in January 2017.
The court heard 29-year-old Angelo’s alleged crimes all related to his significant drug problem and the shame of his brother’s crime and difficulties it presented him in finding a place to live using his real name.
Police allege they were called to a COVID lockdown breach at an address where Angelo Gargasoulas was living.
Police allege Mr Gargasoulas initially gave a false name and a search of the property uncovered two fake IDs and a zip lock bag containing white powder.
The Magistrate described Mr Gargasoulas’s drug problem as “horrendous” and postponed his sentence until he has completed a rehabilitation program.
