A Brunswick West who man imprisoned a woman and brutally raped and tortured her during a sickening four-day attack will spend the next decade behind bars.
Muse Ali was found guilty at the County Court on September 17 of rape, sexual assault, causing injury intentionally, false imprisonment and drug possession.
The 37-year-old locked a woman in her 30s in his Gronn Place home and refused to let her go, raping and torturing her over days, and threatening to hurt anyone close to her if she tried to escape or call for help.
The woman had met Ali, who was a relative’s friend, at a Flemington restaurant in March 2018 and later spoke with him a few times by phone.
In June that year, when she visited his house, Ali accused her of being possessed by the devil and hit her over the head with a metal torch, knocking her unconscious.
He locked the door and took away the key, then threatened to hurt her family and friends if she tried to escape or called for help.
After days of imprisonment, torture and rape, the woman asked to visit a nearby medical clinic, where she lied to staff about how she was injured.
She later escaped the house, calling Ali from the road to tell him she was on her way to her brother’s house.
He demanded she return the key within an hour or he would hurt her brother, his children and loved ones.
The woman returned to the West Brunswick home about 4.15pm to return the key and found the door open.
When she went inside he locked the door and began interrogating and assaulting her.
Throughout the night he injured her whole body including cutting her head open with a sword and burning her arm with a blow torch.
He forced her to strip, bound her in black tape, and took naked photographs of her that he then threatened to put online if she went to the police.
When, at one point he told her to make tea and said he would have a break and start again, she took the opportunity to escape and ran naked out the front door.
She screamed for help and several people came to her aid and was later taken to St Vincents Hospital.
“It’s unusual for this court to observe such an egregious and terrifying series of incidents,” County Court Judge Martine Marich said.
Ali was found guilty in County Court and was sentenced to a non parol period of 11 years and six months in prison.
