A Carlton woman accused of robbing a disabled man while he was asleep in a wheelchair at The Alfred hospital has been condemned by a magistrate as behaving like a “maniac”.
Tashma Sigg, 33, pleaded guilty at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday to a string of charges including theft, handling stolen goods, aggravated burglary, theft and obtaining property by deception.
Ms Sigg was a patient at the hospital when she allegedly stole a MasterCard, $70 cash and mobile from the man on October 16 last year.
She is alleged to have left the hospital with another man, stopping off to buy cigarettes, a Krispy Kreme doughnut, hot chocolate and coffee via pay wave on the stolen card before jumping into a taxi and heading to a Caltex service station to buy more cigarettes.
A shocked Magistrate Graham Keil paused in court to confirm with police the man was a disabled patient asleep in a wheelchair.
“These charges in combination are shocking,” he said. “(A) mountain of offences.
“Does she not understand the difference between right and wrong?
“A truckload of charges, who is driving that truck? A maniac?”
Ms Sigg was taken into custody on December 26 in relation to several outstanding matters and charged the following day.
Police allege Ms Sigg stole six passports, $4600 in cash, laptops, chromebooks and other items sometime between midnight and 3.30am on April 30 this year while six residents were asleep in the house.
Two weeks later, while out on bail, Ms Sigg was allegedly caught on CCTV taking mail from apartment letterboxes on May 12, before breaking into a flat and stealing a projector and virtual reality headset together worth $1755, while two men slept upstairs.
And on June 3, police allege Ms Sigg tried to open every window on the on the south side of the property before entering through the unlocked garage, rummaging through cabinets and stealing a pineapple cider from the fridge.
In an interview with police, Ms Sigg claimed she had no memory of the incident and knew nothing about the burglary despite CCTV putting her at the scene.
The case will back before the Magistrates court on 29 September, 2020.
