WRFL: Derek Eggmolesse-Smith on fire in Point Cook’s first win over Yarraville Seddon

A former AFL player was the star of the show as Point Cook broke through for its first win of the WRFL season with a 16-year-old gun handed his senior debut.

Point Cook coach Brett Jacobs says it would be a dream to have Derek Eggmolesse-Smith available every week.

The former Richmond player has played the last two games for the Dogs in the WRFL and on Saturday was best on ground.

It was a performance which helped guide Point Cook to its first win of the season, 11.13 (79) to 9.9 (63) over a Yarraville Seddon side which had been riding its own high from a week earlier.

Dogs coach Brett Jacobs said Eggmolesse-Smith had “fitted in really well” with the playing group.

“He’s been fantastic for us when he has been available,” he said.

“Against Deer Park, he was one of our better players and I thought he led from the front on Saturday. He’s a really classy player and you can see why he has played at the highest level.

“Every coach would say the same thing but it would be good if we could have him every week.”

Chris Sivanesan was a strong target inside forward 50 throughout the afternoon for Point Cook as he finished with four majors to earn a place among his side’s better players.

Also among the goalkickers was 16-year-old Diesel Moloney who made his senior debut under the WRFL’s 23rd player rule.

Moloney won the WRFL’s under 14 division 1 best and fairest in 2021 and is a member of the Western Jets’ under 19 NAB League squad.

“We’re not the tallest side so we’re probably asking Chris to play above his height a lot of the time,” Jacobs said.

“I just ask him to compete which he always does and it was nice to see him clonk a few on the weekend and get some reward.”

Elliott Wood, Josh Kuppen, Nick Buykx and Alex Grigg were also among the better players for the Dogs.

Meanwhile, Lewis Parsons was named best afield for the Eagles as they slumped to their third loss of the season with Brandon Lester and Blake Green also fighting hard.

“We knew it was always going to be a tough day especially coming up a side who had their first win,” Jacobs said.

“But our form has been improving every week and I thought it all came together which was really pleasing.”

Point Cook will look to make it back-to-back wins against St Albans as the Eagles travel to take on Hoppers Crossing.
