MPNFL: Chelsea thrashes Hastings and Karingal edges Pearcedale in Division 2

Emotional speeches, on-field magic and a thumping win helped two Chelsea champions celebrate milestone games in style — and one of them even kicked his first-ever goal.

Chelsea coach Dave Willett says his side was “on” from the get-go against Hastings on Saturday.

A past players function had Chelsea Reserve buzzing.

In the Seagulls rooms, two of their champions Todd Gardiner and Luke Caspersz were gearing up for their 150th games.

“The boys turned up and played in the right manner,’’ Willett said.

“There was a good vibe. We had a couple of ex players speak about the boys playing their 150th games.

“They were on. It made life a bit easier.’’

Chelsea hurried to a 36-point lead at half-time and kicked six goals to one in the last quarter to bolt clear for a 91-point win, 18.14 (122) to 4.7 (31).

There was a special moment in the last quarter when milestone man Caspersz — known as “The Blanket’’ for his close-checking defensive work — was moved to the forward line and kicked his first goal in senior football.

Minutes later he gave a handpass to Gardiner, who also slotted a goal.

It was party time for the Seagulls, who improved their record to 3-1.

Willett said it was the best win of the season for the Gulls.

“It’s the best we’ve connected, yeah,’’ he said.

“And it’s been hard when you introduce five or six new players and everyone is trying to buy in and play the right way, it just takes time.’’

Chelsea had winners all over the ground.

Up forward Mitch Brown kicked four goals and Mathew Baxter three, while Bonbeach recruits Nick Stamatis and Brayden Chapple were influential.

Another newcomer Sam McKinnon impressed at both ends of the ground.

Before the game, past player Nizam Abdallah spoke about his great mate Caspersz and his contribution to the club.

And Matt Gardiner spoke of the dedication and skill of his brother Todd.
