WRFL: Ben Doll boots season high 16 goals for Albion

An Albion forward enjoyed a day out with 16 majors as the Cats moved into fourth spot on a weekend where several monster scores were recorded across Divisions 2 and 3.

St Arnaud's stunning goal

Ben Doll could do just about no wrong for Albion on Saturday.

The Cats forward, who returned to the club from Yarraville Seddon at the start of the season, booted 16 goals as his side jumped into the top four on percentage following a 32.19 (211) to 3.3 (21) thumping of West Footscray in the WRFL’s Division 2.

His effort saw him move to the top of the goalkicking charts with 58 for the season, five clear of Aaron Williams from Point Cook Centrals.

In light of Doll’s achievements, Albion wrote on its Facebook page “16 goals, who is he?”

It was the most goals in a game for Albion since Shaydon Bloomfield’s 13-goal effort against Glen Orden way back in 2011.

Bloomfield went onto kick 100 majors in Division 1 that season.

“16 goals in the wet that’s unbelievable,” another person wrote on Albion’s post.

While another suggested Doll had a big future ahead of him.

“Amazing ability this young man only going to get better,” they wrote.

Doll’s effort was the best Division 2 effort since Mathew Sutton finished with 15 goals for Caroline Springs during the Lakers run to the 2016 premiership.

Sutton reached double figures on three occasions that year.

The Cats weren’t the only side to enjoy a big win either with Point Cook Centrals putting Glen Orden to the sword 24.14 (158) to 6.10 (46).

Ryan Tandy played his first game of the year for the Sharks while Cam Mellor, Corey Sharrocks and Josh Ingham all made their senior debuts.

There were much closer results in other games as Newport stunned North Footscray to keep its finals hopes alive.

The 11.8 (74) to 7.8 (50) victory came on the back of a strong second half with Mustafa Mesto named best after a three-goal display.

Meanwhile, Parkside bounced back with a 10.17 (77) to 9.5 (59) victory over Wyndhamvale to lock away a top-two finish and double chance.

Brent Kelly finished with five goals for the Magpies in his best game of the season.

DIVISION 3 MARRED BY HORROR RESULTS

The bottom sides in Division 3 have continued to endure painful results after a horror weekend of results.

Braybrook added to Laverton’s pain with a 50.24 (324) to 1.0 (6) result with Shaun Buttigieg-Clarke kicking 14 goals and moving to 88 for the season.

Matt Turcinovich finished with 11 of his own.

North Sunshine endured a tough day of their own going down to ladder leader Suns 37.19 (241) to 1.0 (6) away from home.

Suns coach Dean Cachia returned to the side with 11 goals.

In the round’s closest game, Albanvale was able to outclass Tarneit 13.14 (92) to 6.9 (45) with a five-goal to one third term proving pivotal for the Cobras.

Brock McLarty was named best afield for the visitors.
